Wichtige Regeln zum Gebrauch des Subjunctives

Present Subjunctive (“Infinitiv-Form” auch in der 3. Person!) folgt nach that (Signalwort!) bei  Verben des Wünschens, Aufforderns, Verlangens:

E.g.: Her brother advised that she go and see a doctor.

 

Present Subjunctive drückt in Nebensätzen einen hohen Grad an Förmlichkeit aus:

E.g.: May the price be high, we will never stop fighting for freedom in the world.

 

Present Subjunctive wird in Nebensätzen des Ziels/des Zweckes/der Absicht verwendet (Signalwörter: in order that, so that, so). Er drückt hier ebenfalls Förmlichkeit aus und kann meistens durch eine Form von should/could/can/may etc. ersetzt werden:

E.g.: A big company has recently equipped four schools with computers so that their students be taught adequately.

 

Past Subjunctive (were-Subjunctive) wird in irrealen Bedingungssätzen verwendet:

E.g.: If you were here now, I would be so happy.

 

Subjunctive wird außerdem in Wunschsätzen gebraucht (Signalwörter: if only, wish):

E.g.: I wish you were here with me right now.
